Drag has been around for generations. This art form has been a vital part of the LGBTQ+ community’s culture for years, evolving more and more as time passes. However, it is only in the past decade that drag has been becoming more and more present in the mainstream.
While one can argue that this is partly because of the success of American shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race, series like these are definitely far from being the be-all and end-all of drag. In fact, the drag culture here in the Philippines is very much alive, which is exactly what Drag Playhouse PH is here to show.
Drag Playhouse PH, a local drag content and entertainment provider with the mission to #KeepDragAlive, has started a YouTube channel where they will be posting new content by a variety of local drag artists.
In their Facebook post, they wrote, “Staying true to our vision to #KeepDragAlive, we bring you the first and only channel that showcases FILIPINO DRAG, all in one place! Starting next week, we will bring you all-exclusive and never before seen content by drag artists – for drag artists.”
They will be posting new content soon, but the channel already has some videos up, such as recordings of online vogue battles, lipsync performances, and other segments of their virtual drag ball.
As drag becomes more prominent in the mainstream, it’s important to know that it’s an art form with a rich and diverse history that goes way beyond Western pop culture. So, if you are someone who loves drag, remember that there’s so much art and talent in the local drag scene as well that deserves your support. And, while we’re all staying at home, checking out this channel and showing some love to these excellent Filipino drag artists is a great start.
