Batanes bans single-use plastics by 2021

In an effort to maintain the picturesque views of Batanes, the province implemented rules against the use of single-use plastics starting next year.

The provincial government of Batanes announced that entry, sale, food cling wrappers, non-biodegradable plastic and garbage bags, plastic cups, straws, stirrers, cutlery, cups, styro foam for food packaging, and PET bottles below 500mL will no longer be allowed next year.

Plastics allowed are biodegradable plastic bags that are manufactured and labelled by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), PET bottles bigger than 500mL, styro foam boxes for cold storage, and plastic (cellophane pouch) packaging for ice-making, ice candies yellow ginger, sugar, and other condiments.

Businesses who are caught not complying will be fined up to PHP 3,000 while those who will litter would be penalized.
