Selena Gomez cooks Filipino adobo in her HBO cooking show

For the second season of Selena + Chef, the chart-topping pop artist tries her hand at one of the most polarizing yet generally beloved Filipino dishes: the adobo.

In the preview aired by HBO Max where the unscripted cooking show streams, Selena Gomez is seen preparing adobo with the help of Filipino-American celebrity chef Jordan Andino. Andino is the host of “Late Nite Eats” and the owner of Flip Sigi, a Filipino-Mexican taqueria in New York.

We say “polarizing,” because fans of the dish are usually grouped into two: those who like it dry and flaky, and those who like it rich and saucy. Based on the preview aired by HBO Max, I think we can tell that Selena’s style in whipping up adobo leans towards the thick, saucy kind.

But don’t take our word for it – take the word of Andino’s Filipino lola. According to the preview, Andino patches her grandmother through video chat to critique Selena’s adobo, to which she gives a casual “It’s okay,” making Selena and the chef laugh.

For the upcoming season, Selena will solicit the help of even more celebrity chefs like Top Chef’s Curtis Stone, Master Chef’s Graham Eliot, Best Baker in America’s Marcela Valladolid, Food Network’s Aarti Sequeira, and singer-turned-chef Kelis Rogers, among others.

The new season premieres on January 21, with the first three episodes set to be released on HBO Max.
