Summer is coming

“The Summer I Turned Pretty” is the first of the three books in Jenny Han’s first young adult series, published in 2009. This was followed by “It’s Not Summer Without You,” published in 2010, and ended with “We’ll Always Have Summer,” published in 2011.

The series follows the story of Belly Conklin, a teenage girl who spends her summers at Cousins Beach with her mom (Laurel), her brother (Steven), and her mom’s best friend’s family (Susannah, Conrad, and Jeremiah).

“The Summer I Turned Pretty is many years in the making, and I’m so excited to tell Belly’s story in 2021,” Jenny said.

Albert Cheng, the Chief Operating Officer and co-head of television for Amazon Studios, described Jenny’s storytelling as rich and relatable. He said, “In bringing this beloved novel to life as a television series, Jenny’s distinct voice will resonate with our global Prime Video audience, who are eager for more smart, funny and authentic Young Adult content.”

She did it again

Days before the premiere of “To All the Boys: Always and Forever,” Jenny shared a Variety article about her other trilogy’s screen adaptation. “Summer is coming!” Jenny said.

She also posted a TikTok video of herself lip synching to Britney Spears with the lyrics “I think I did it again!” while showing comments from fans asking for a film or series adaptation of her romance novels.

She captioned her post, “Summer I Turned Pretty coming soon(ish) to a [TV] near you.”

The show is slated to have eight episodes (so far), with the pilot episode written by Jenny herself! Aside from writing for the show, she is also involved as an executive producer and co-showrunner for the series.

She said, “For the longtime book fans, I think it will have been worth the wait. For those newly discovering the Summer series, I hope you fall in love with these characters and this place that is so dear to my heart.”
