Netflix made the big reveal on the morning of March 8, 2021.
“Call Alexandra… cause I’ve got news. It’s official, Liza Soberano & Shay Mitchell are Alexandra Trese!!! May strong women always lend a voice to one another, especially when there’s an aswang or two around. Happy International Women’s Day,” Netflix posted.
Liza also expressed her excitement to be part of this historical project: “It’s an honor to be the voice of an iconic character such as Alexandra Trese. I’m a huge fan of Budjette and KaJO’s award-winning Trese comics. Maraming salamat! Excited [na ako]!”
“Trese,” whose full name is Alexandra Trese, is the lead character in Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo’s Filipino comic series of the same name. She is a private detective who solves cases that involve supernatural beings such as aswangs, kapres, and engkantos.
Filipino-American director Jay Oliva is set to be the show’s executive producer, while Shanty Hamayn and Tanya Yuson from BASE Entertainment will be producers.
The video streaming giant first announced that “Trese” will have an anime series adaptation in 2018. Then during the Netflix Anime Festival 2020 on October 27, 2020, it was revealed that the series will be available not only in the Philippines, but in all countries with Netflix!
It was also during this time when Netflix gave a sneak peek of the upcoming series. “Aswangs of Manila, beware: Alexandra Trese is coming for you. Enjoy this very first look at TRESE, coming soon on Netflix.”
We’re so excited for the whole world to see this strong Filipina character!
