Unless you’re one of the few chosen ones whose skin doesn’t break out at all, it’s normal to have breakouts every now and then. Unfortunately, acne can really take its toll on one’s self-esteem.

With so many options in the world of beauty products, it can be tempting to go panic buying and try every solution under the sun. However, experts agree that there’s one skin product ingredient that is a cut above the rest. That is salicylic acid.

What is salicylic acid?

What is salicylic acid exactly? Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), a type of carbon-based organic compound that naturally occurs in willow bark, fruits, and vegetables, according to Caren Campbell, MD, a San Francisco-based dermatologist.

What it does is exfoliates dead skin cells on the skin’s surface, and decrease oil and sebum. In addition to this, it also works as a comedolytic and anti-inflammatory ingredient. In layman’s terms, it exfoliates and brightens the skin as well as unclogs the pores to prevent blackheads, whiteheads, and acne breakouts.

Salicylic improves acne blemishing a.k.a it clears up your skin. Aside from fighting acne, this hardworking ingredient is also useful in treating conditions such as psoriasis and warts. How awesome, right?

It should be noted that salicylic acid is best for those with oily, acne-prone skin. Those with sensitive or dry skin should steer clear of it as it can be very drying and irritating for some people. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to avoid using products with this ingredient as well.

The skincare cure that worked on one person may not be effective on another’s skin, so it’s important to do some research before you spend on anti-acne products. Before seeking professional help, why not give salicylic-based products a shot though? It might just be the answer to your acne-related problems.
