After several attempts at a spinoff, it’s finally happening – a “How I Met Your Mother” sequel series titled “How I Met Your Father” will see production, with Hilary Duff already confirmed for the lead part.
Per Deadline, Hulu has given the project a 10-episode straight-to-series order. Original HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will return as executive producers, while “This is Us” co-showrunners and “Love, Victor” co-creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger will oversee the show as writers. Aside from starring, Duff will also be on board as a producer.
“Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father,” Bays and Thomas said in a joint statement on Wednesday per a piece by The Hollywood Reporter.
Meanwhile, Duff also expressed her excitement over being part of the “dream team” for the new spinoff show.
“I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,” Duff told THR. “As a huge fan of ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby. Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius.”
“Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and A “How I Met Your Mother” sequel starring Hilary Duff is on the way20th families. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!”
But what would HIMYF be all about? Well, the title pretty much says it all.
According to Variety, the sequel occurs in the near future and centers on Sophie (Duff) telling her son the story of how she met his father. It’s “a story that catapults us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.”
How I Met Your Mother ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014 on CBS. One of the most well-liked comedy shows, HIMYM was nominated for 30 Emmy Awards, and won ten. It follows the lengthy story of how the father, Ted Mosby, met the love of his life and dealt with life with the help of his closest friends. It starred Josh Radnor, Jason Siegel, Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders, and Neil Patrick Harris.
HIMYF sounds like a fresh idea, so we can’t yet say whether the upcoming series will tie itself to the original characters or timeline to qualify as a sequel or a spinoff. However, that isn’t saying that a crossover or an unexpected cameo is impossible.
There’s no word yet on when How I Met Your Father will premiere, but let’s hope we won’t have to “wait for it” for too long.
