A lot of things were revealed in “Friends: The Reunion,” but Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer‘s confession that they had feelings for each other in real life is probably the most shocking one of them all.
At one point in the show, James Corden asked the cast members if there were any off-screen romances that happened while they were filming the series twenty plus years ago. Jennifer immediately looked at her on-screen partner and said, “Well… I mean, David?”
David, who played the role of Ross Geller, admitted that he had real feelings for Jennifer, who played his character’s on-and-off girlfriend, Rachel Green. “[During] the first season, I had a major crush on Jen. And I think at some point, we were both crushing hard on each other,” he said.
Jennifer added that the feelings that had were mutual, saying that “It was reciprocated.”
However, the two never became a real-life couple because they never became available at the same time. “It was like two ships passing because one of us was always in a relationship. And we never crossed that boundary, you know. We respected that,” David said.
Ross and Rachel’s emotional first kiss at Central Perk in season two also happened to be the pair’s first kiss ever. “Honestly, I remember saying one time to David, ‘It’s gonna be such a bummer if the first time you and I actually kiss is gonna be on national television.’ Sure enough, [the] first time we kissed was in that coffee shop,” Jennifer said.
Since they never got together in real life, Jennifer and David just turned these feelings into something that would help them portray their characters better. “We just channeled all of our adoration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel,” Jennifer said.
David also expressed his surprise at how their co-stars never noticed the mutual crush between him and Jennifer. “When we had breaks from rehearsal, there were moments we would cuddle on the couch. And I’m thinking, ‘How did not everyone know we weren’t crushing on each other?'”
But it turns out that their castmates actually had an idea of what was going on between them. Both Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox said to David, “We knew.”
Just like James Corden who asked the audience, “Is this blowing anyone else’s mind?,” we’re still in shock with this major “Friends” revelation.
