Danish football player Christian Eriksen shared an update about his current condition after suffering a cardiac arrest during a game on June 12, 2021.

“Hello everyone. Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family,” he said.

He posted a selfie from his hospital bed and shared about his improving condition. “I’m fine – under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations at the hospital, but I feel okay. Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches,” he continued.

ICD implantation

Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during a Denmark vs. Finland Euro 2020 match on Saturday. Danish team doctor Morten Boesen said that Eriksen was already “gone,” but was quickly revived by medics.

“He was gone. We started the resuscitation and we managed to do it. How close were we to losing him? I don’t know, but we got him back after one [defibrillation], so that’s quite fast,” he said.

The 29-year-old football star will be fitted with an under-skin heart-starting device called ICD or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, which is “necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances,” according to Doctor Boesen. The Danish team also said that Eriksen already agreed to the ICD implantation after the recommendation of various specialists.

Moment of applause

Football players and fans from Belgium and Denmark paid tribute to Eriksen ten minutes into a game held on June 17, 2021. “Play has stopped and there’s a moment of applause for Christian Eriksen, who’s recovering in hospital following a medical emergency during Denmark’s opening game against Finland,” UEFA EURO 2020 shared in a tweet.

Photos from the emotional moment show players from opposing teams hugging and fans holding banners with messages of support for Eriksen.
