It may have taken 17 years for us to see the whole cast together again, but the joy and nostalgia that Friends: The Reunion delivered was worth the wait. The time that passed since the show ended couldn’t erase the cast’s chemistry that made Friends the cultural phenomenon it was and still is, and this reunion is proof of that.
Here are just a few of the best moments from the reunion:
The one where they all arrive on set
The reunion doesn’t wait to pull on our heartstrings. It opens with David Schwimmer arriving at the original sound stage where they filmed all ten seasons of the sitcom. Then, one by one, the rest of the cast arrives. Seeing their reactions as they first reunite, trading hugs and stories while wandering through the iconic set, definitely gave everyone chills.
The one with the trivia quiz
Who can forget the episode where Rachel and Monica lost their apartment to Chandler and Joey in a trivia game? It was hilarious to see Schwimmer moderate the game again as the rest competed in a Friends trivia quiz. The setup was also the perfect way to reference iconic scenes from the sitcom and introduce other guest stars who have been on the show (such as Tom Selleck who played Richard).
The one with the off-screen romance
Or the almost-romance, at least. The biggest revelation in the reunion, perhaps, was when Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston admitted to having crushes on each other when filming the earlier seasons. They recall being “like two ships passing” because they were never single at the same time. “We just channeled all of our adoration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel,” Aniston said. And if that wasn’t enough to get Ross/Rachel fans freaking out, then the behind-the-scenes footage of them flirting on set and the two actors recreating the first kiss scene during a table read definitely was.
The one with the iconic guest stars
From the interviews of huge stars and personalities that loved the show to a segment where Lady Gaga performs Smelly Cat, there definitely wasn’t a shortage of A-listers in the reunion. It was great to see how much of a phenomenon Friends was that it didn’t just influence the lives of regular fans, but also some of the biggest names in the world.
The one with the casting stories
One of the most fascinating parts of the reunion was getting to hear how everyone got cast. From the fact that the creators had to beg Schwimmer to take the role of Ross because he had quit television to stories of how Aniston and Matthew Perry were already committed to different sitcoms (both of which had already filmed pilots), it’s crazy to think of all the ways we could have had a completely different set of actors playing the iconic group.
The one with talks of the future
When asked where their characters would be right now, the cast didn’t fail to deliver. Aniston and Schwimmer agreed that Ross and Rachel would be married and would have more kids. Cox said that Monica was still the ever-competitive PTA mom even long after her and Chandler’s kids have grown up and that Chandler still makes her laugh every day.
Kudrow then added that Phoebe and Mike would be in Connecticut where Phoebe advocated for kids who were different — including their own —and created an arts program. And Matt LeBlanc ends it in a true Joey manner: “I think he probably opened a sandwich shop in Venice Beach.”
All these years and the cast still know their characters better than anyone else.
