It’s about time! It looks like you can now have video calls and share your screens via Telegram. The company announced this new update through a blog post last year, but rolled out the update just recently.
Basically, you can turn voice chats in any group on the platform into video calls by simply tapping the camera icon to turn on your device’s video. While an unlimited number of people can join Telegram voice calls, group video calls are limited to 30 users only, so there’s that. However, the company is looking to increase this limit ‘soon’ so there’s that.
Participants who are in a group call can also simultaneously share their screens. The option to use this feature can be seen in the menu.
If you’re having your Telegram video call via tablet or desktop, you will see a split-screen view showing a video grid and the list of participants. It can be used in both portrait and landscape orientation. Plus, desktop users can opt for selective screen sharing to broadcast a specific program instead of their whole screen, similar to how users share via Zoom. Their voice chats will also appear on a separate window for an easier way to type and talk.
In addition to video calls, Telegram also added a lot of cool features, including animated backgrounds, message animations and emojis, a bot menu, and even an option to import stickers. Sounds awesome, right?
Telegram has over 500 million active users already, and the number of users just keeps on growing. One reason why it’s so popular is because it focuses on privacy, encryption, and an open-source API. To add to this, you can transfer files that are up to 2GB via Telegram. How convenient, right?
