Damodar das Castillo brought home another top prize from an international music competition—this time from the Musica Goritiensis International Music Competition in Italy.

The 13-year-old Filipino cellist won first place in the Category C of the Gorizia-based competition, which was held online from May 29 to June 2, 2021. Just like the Vienna-based World Orchestra Festival where the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra won, contestants this year were asked to submit videos of their performances instead of flying to Italy to play live at Theater Kulturni.

Castillo played Auguste Franchomme‘s Caprice No 9 in B Minor, Op.7, the second movement from Francois Francoeur‘s Cello Sonata in E Major, and the first movement from Edward Elgar‘s Cello Concerto in E minor, Opus 85 in his winning video performance.

Other contestants that won were Sifrara Ivana from Slovenia and Kolloros Maximimilan from Austria, who both took home the second prize.

Castillo’s victory marks his fifth big win in an international music competition. He also won first place at the North International Music Autumn Competition in 2017, Estonia-based International Competition for Young Musicians in 2019, German-based International Artur Rubinstein Competition in 2020, and the Young Ludwig International Music Competition in 2020.

The young cellist also played as a member of the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra and appeared on the ABS-CBN show “Little Big Shots” in 2017.
