The 2022 SONA’s Best And Worst Dressed People

Everyone came dressed to kill, but not all of them succeeded.

The newly-elected Philippine president held his first SONA last July 25. Politicians and celebrities were in attendance, wearing finery from known designers. Some politicians and personalities took patriotism to heart and wore indigenous clothing.

Some wore it well, but others didn’t quite pull the look off. Here are ten of the best and worst-dressed people at the SONA. The SONA isn’t only a political event. It’s also an opportunity for fashion enthusiasts to judge public servants’ style.

SONA 2022 Best Dressed

Coming in hot at number 5 is France Castro from ACT Teachers Partylist. She is one of the few who defied the House memorandum of not wearing clothes with political messages. Her black ensemble featured a teacher carrying a torch. It signifies the role of teachers in bringing truth amidst rampant historical revisionism.

At number 4, we have Senator Risa Hontiveros. Many are saying that her classic Filipiniana made her look like she was about to attend a baptism. But we beg to differ. Her clean look and neat bun made for an effortless statement: I am woman.

We have current Manila Mayor Honey Lacuña at number 3. She wore a stunning purple Filipiniana created by local designer Jo Rubio. The ensemble contrasted against her white skin, making her stand out even more.

At number 2 we have Isabelle Daza with her bespoke terno made by her mother’s seamstress. She paired it with white heels and floral earrings made by JJ Jiao.

This list wouldn’t be complete without Heart Evangelista and Senator Chiz Escudero. They blew us away in their matching outfits by Mark Bumgarner.

Heart wore a long terno with rows of tiny crystals, and the senator wore a barong with a Chinese collar.

SONA 2022 Worst Dressed

Imee Marcos comes in at number 5, with her drab gray Filipiniana. Her previous outfit, meant to honor farmers, looked like a terno made from cheap cloth.

Coming in at number 4 is Senator Bato Dela Rosa, whose barong made heads turn, but not in a good way. He looked like he was wearing an apron over a patterned long-sleeved top.

At number 3 we have First Lady Liza Marcos, who wore a terno created by Lesley Mobo. But she did not give justice to the piece as it looked drab and shapeless on her.

We have Nancy Binay at number 2, with her bland Aklan-made baro’t saya. She looked stiff and uncomfortable in her outfit, and it showed.

At number 1 we have Inday Sara Duterte, who wore a Bagobo Tagabawa traditional dress.

But she could have done without the atrocious headdress that seemed out of place.

A recap

The SONA happens once a year, and politicians and celebrities make it a point to dress up and stand out. Like any other well-attended event, there are hits and misses when it comes to fashion.
