A fellow Filipina is set to help bring the stories of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureates into the light: prized photojournalist Hannah Reyes Morales has been tapped to highlight Nobel Peace Prize winners Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov through a photography exhibition in Oslo, Norway.

Morales, along with her fellow photojournalist Nanna Heitman, will feature the significant contributions of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureates, who were selected “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.” For her part in the exhibit, Morales “has created a documentary photo series that depicts how social media permeates everyday life in the Philippines”

“This work is personal: like many of us at home, watching the consistent assault on truth has been deeply disturbing,” Morales shared through the Nobel Peace Center. “I’ve been able to take a closer look at the chaos that is rooted online, and in the dark, I was reminded constantly that on the other side of the screen are people.”

Nina Frang Høyum, the Nobel Peace Center’s Director of Exhibitions, also commended the two for their time-tested expertise: “We are very happy to have worked with two such talented, young documentary photographers, who are also from the Nobel Peace Prize laureates’ home countries. They are therefore very experienced in working under trying conditions for freedom of the press and expression.”

A National Geographic explorer since 2017, Morales has won several awards over the long span of her photojournalism career, most recently bagging first place in the Picture of the Year (POY) Asia for her work, “Cultural Practices, Living Lullabies.”

In 2020, she received the Infinity Award for Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism by the International Center of Photography, and was named a cultural leader by the World Economic Forum in the same year.

Her works featuring life amidst adversity and conflict have also made it to The New York Times, The Washington Post, and National Geographic.
