In 2016, ex-Grab driver Carlo Santiago Diaz won over everyone’s hearts when the story of him giving out cooked meals and clothes to street dwellers went viral. A curious netizen saw him give a brown bag with cooked food to an old woman on the street and shared the story on social media. The rest is history.
According to Philippine Star, this was just part of his routine. “Hindi ko po binibilang, pero madalas po naming gawin — kami ng girlfriend ko saka yung iba pa pong mga Grab drivers (We don’t count our deeds, but we often do it – my girlfriend and I and other Grab drivers),” he explained.
When asked why he chose to help others despite his limited funds, he told the publication, “Hindi ako mayaman pero swerte ako. May bahay, may nakakakain. Kahit hindi ka mayaman, makakatulong ka para pumuno sa kung saan kulang ang iba (I’m not rich but I’m lucky. I have a house, something to eat. Even if you’re not rich, you can help those who are in lack).”
Five years after his heartwarming story won over the internet, he shared that he is now the one in need of help. His daughter, Baby Cali, has been diagnosed with rare liver cancer. Diaz and his then-girlfriend turned wife had been forced to stop working to be with their daughter during this trying period. They are currently at St. John’s Hospital in Canada for medication and they need funds.
According to their Facebook Fundraiser page, the young family needs financial assistance to pay for baby Cali’s expensive treatment and other needs. People all over the world have been stepping up to the plate and giving back to Diaz and his family. “On behalf of the Diaz family, we appreciate your generosity and love. Cali is a smart, happy, and strong baby. She will beat this!” they shared on the page.
Baby Cali’s battle is not over, and the bills are still expected to pile up. While it may be tough times for everyone, a little help can go a long way. Even sharing his story might touch someone from your network’s heart, and turn into some help for the family. With everything happening in the world, it would be nice if the internet banned together to do something good. It’d be nice to see a good guy win.
