The tennis wunderkind even did so during the Philippines’ Independence Day!

Filipino tennis star Alex Eala is now a two-time Grand Slam champion after she and Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva downed the pair of Russia’s Amarissa Toth and Hungary’s Maria Bondarenko, 6-0, 7-5, in the girls doubles finals of the 2021 French Open Paris on Saturday at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France.

The top-seeded Filipino-Russian tandem touted an untarnished run before reaching the tournament finals. They maintained their momentum with a decisive first set, winning all six games in just 20 minutes. The second set saw a retaliating Toth-Bondarenko who forced a 5-5 tie, but it was Eala and Selekhmeteva’s harmony that felled their foes and closed the bout at 7-5.

This is the second Grand Slam Champion title for the 16-year-old Eala, who won her first by teaming with Indonesian Priska Nugroho to scoop a spectacular victory in the 2020 Australian Open girls’ doubles tournament.

Sa lahat ng Pinoy na nanood, maraming salamat sa suporta. It’s actually Independence Day today so I hope that I made my contribution to the country,” Eala said post-match per Inquirer.

Earlier this year, Eala also made headlines by capturing her first women’s professional ITF title in the W15 Manacor ITF Pro Tournament, for which she earned the praise of her mentor, tennis legend Rafael Nadal.
