You might have to reschedule your post-ECQ plans. As per the Department of Health (DOH), the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) currently in effect in the National Capital Region (NCR) may be extended due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases and ongoing rampage of the Delta variant.
According to GMA News Online, this will still be discussed by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said.
“Nandiyan lagi ‘yung posibilidad because based on our projections, kahit magkaroon tayo ng dalawang linggong ECQ, patuloy pong tataas ang mga kaso natin (There is always that possibility because based on our projections, even if we have two weeks of ECQ, the number of COVID-19 cases will continue to rise),” she said.
“Ang atin po lang objective for this ECQ is for us to prepare the system para mas ma-manage natin itong ganitong klaseng sitwasyon (Our objective for this ECQ is for us to prepare the system so we can better manage this kind of situation.) ,” Vergeire added. “As to the extension of ECQ, of course, ito po ay pag-uusapan sa IATF (this will be discussed by the IATF).”
Vergeire explained that simply imposing a lockdown is not enough to contain the COVID situation in the country. Other measures need to be imposed too, so the economy won’t be burdened too much. What measures are these exactly? There’s no announcement yet.
To put things into perspective, there are over 1.6 million cases in the country. Almost 80 thousand of these cases are active. As of now, the official word is that Metro Manila will be under ECQ until the 20th of August. What will happen after that? Well, we’ll have to wait and see.
