As more private and public schools slowly ease back to face-to-face classes, the prospect of gunning for the Philippines’ top universities through competitive admission tests is once again coming clear on the horizon.

However, due to the “pandemic’s uncertain trajectory,” the University of the Philippines (UP) has once again elected to forego its admission exam for the second year in a row.

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 7, the premier state university said that University Councils across the UP system “voted overwhelmingly” in favor of the suspension due to the “immense logistical challenge of administering UPCAT throughout the archipelago” while a pandemic rages on.

Instead, UP will once again implement its Admissions Scoring Model to filter the influx of first-year students for the Academic Year 2022-2023. The system, which the Office Admissions’ data scientists develop and refined over the last academic year, makes use of an applicant’s high school grades in place of the main component that is the admission test.

“In the absence of a college admission test, a composite of the final grades in Grades 8, 9, 10, and 11 shall be the basis to determine the UPG,” UP said.

Meanwhile, the Ateneo de Manila University and the University of Santo Tomas have also decided to forego their respective college entrance exams. They will likewise implement a similar system that weighs an applicant’s academic records from their previous school.

UP has begun accepting applications for the 2022-2023 school year since last October. Last week, the state university has also approved the guidelines for the gradual reopening of the campus for limited face-to-face classes come next year. The motion will prioritize the 338 graduating students from degree programs that require physical completion.
