Macario Duguiang, former Kalinga governor, has died on Sunday at the age of 72.
According to relatives, Duguiang had been suffering from a lingering illness.
He started his term in the province on July 1, 2011 until June 30, 2014. In the three-year span, Duguiang became known as the middle man among the Kalingas and would often settle conflicts between different tribes.
He was previously a lawyer and served as Lubuagan town mayor and regional director of the Department of Transportation and Communication-Cordillera Administrative Region.
Government-owned Radyo Pilipinas-Kalinga broadcaster Hazel Gup-ay said of the late governor, “He once served as Philippine Red Cross chairperson in Kalinga and also held other positions in the private and government sectors, a peace pact holder, a negotiator of disputes and various problems, an adviser, a mentor, a friend to everybody and a very humble person.”
The Province of Kalinga Facebook page offered a post in Duguiang’s honor. They described him as a “Kalinga Pangat, a good adviser, a peacepact holder and a peace negotiator.”
“To our former Governor Atty. Macario Duguiang, you shall not be forgotten,” the post said. “You will forever be in our hearts and remain as an inspiration to all the people of Kalinga.”
