Look out ghosters, your time is up!
Are you tired of getting “ghosted?” Worry no more! The House of Representatives has got your back. Or at least one person there does. Rep. Arnolfo Teves filed a bill seeking to declare ghosting an emotional offense.
“Ghosting” is defined as ending a relationship without explanation. This is prevalent, especially in the online dating scene. The goal of the anti-ghosting bill (House Bill 611) is to protect people from emotional and/or mental abuse.
For context, Rep. Teves is from the third district of Negros Oriental. He was also the one who proposed to change the name of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Rep. Teves wants it named after ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. because he built it. This is a false claim, as construction on NAIA began in 1947. Manuel Roxas was the Philippine president at the time.

“In the age of social media and in today’s world, dating has changed. Now, couples communicate using cellular phones. They use cellular phones as an avenue for meeting and dating,” Rep. Teves said in his explanatory note.
“Studies say that rejection activates the same pathways in the brain as physical pain. There’s a biological link between rejection and pain. That goes for friends and partners alike,” he added.
Asked if this bill is relevant or not, Teves says, “Ginawa ko lang ito. I leave it up to the majority kung anong magandang penalty. ‘Di naman kailangan mabigat, ‘di ba. Pag ang tao natatamaan emotionally, maraming nadadamay. Dapat magawan natin ng paraan,” he adds.

Read House Bill 611, and you will notice that there are no penalties stated, if ever the person is found to have committed an emotional offense.
