Here’s how Bernie Sanders Responded to the Viral Inauguration Memes

If you’ve been on social media since the inauguration of US President Joe Biden, you might have come across memes of an old gentleman sitting down wearing a face mask, a warm jacket, and a pair of mittens.

US senator Bernie Sanders became the star of the event when the internet spotted him getting cozy and looking grumpy at Capitol Hill. From real-life situations to movie scenes, the photo of the Democrat senator has been the subject of a lot of hilarious memes. But how did he react to the world’s fascination of him?

In an interview with Late Night with Seth Meyers, Sanders admitted he wasn’t aware that the internet noticed him during the event. “I was just trying to keep warm, trying to pay attention to what was going on,” he said.

He even shared that the school teachers who made his internet-famous mittens has been overwhelmed with the interest people have been showing her design. “What was really nice, Seth, is that the woman who made the mittens lives in Essex Junction, Vermont, she is a schoolteacher and a very, very nice person, and she has been somewhat overwhelmed by the kind of attention that is being shown to her mittens,” Sanders explained.

Sanders is using his meme status to good use as his team is selling merchandise such as t-shirts and sweaters featuring the famous meme. All proceeds will go to charities in the senator’s home state of Vermont.

Aside from breaking the internet, Sanders has been pre-occupied with fast-tracking the COVID stimulus package for Americans and raising minimum wage to $15 an hour. While he’s busy fighting to make his countrymen’s lives easier, it’s nice to know he’s not above poking fun at himself. After all, what’s life without a little sense of humor?
