To be clear, the new designs were released as early as July 30 this year, but due to the slow circulation brought by the pandemic, people are just now getting a firsthand look at these glistening new marks.
In fulfillment of central bank practices where current banknotes are upgraded every 10 years, the Bangko Sentral introduced fresh fronts to Philippine bills.
All current tenders now come with windowed security threads that highlight a holographic Visayan textile design and tactile marks on the extreme right end of the note. Also, enhanced value panels and new patch designs printed with optically variable ink and featuring the three stars and a sun, as well as the T’nalak indigenous weave design, now grace the 500 and 1,000 bills, respectively.
As for our coin series, in case you missed it, there’s now a 20-peso coin. Still featuring the late President Manuel L. Quezon, the 20-peso coin and the newly enhanced 5-peso coin are part of the New Generation Currency (NGC), the latest in the series which features laser-engraved, micro-printed details to combat counterfeiting.

As a tradition, all supplanted bills and coins will be taken out of circulation through natural attrition.
