Kristina Knott sprinting to the Tokyo Olympics

And another Filipina is heading to the Olympics! Filipino-American sprinter Kristina Knott just secured her ticket to the Tokyo Olympics through the universality rule and will see action in the women’s 200m sprint event, as per GMA News Online.

The 25-year-old is the 15th Pinoy set to be heading to the Olympics. She joins EJ Obiena (pole vault), Carlos Yulo (gymnastics), Hidilyn Diaz and Elreen Ando (weightlifting), Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio (boxing), Criz Nievarez (rowing), Kurt Barbosa (taekwondo), Margielyn Didal (skateboarding), Jayson Valdez (shooting), Juvic Pagunsan (golf), and Kiyomi Watanabe (judo).

She is a two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, boasting a national and SEAG record of 23.01 seconds. Will Knott be the first Pinoy to bag a gold medal in the upcoming Olympics? We’ll have to wait to find out.

The upcoming international multi-sport event is scheduled to be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. Like nearly all sporting events, it has been delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Well, it looks like this year’s tournament is happening. It’s exciting to see sports thriving amid everything going on.

It seems to have worked in Filipino athletes’ advantage as more athletes have qualified in the tournament this year. There were 13 Philippine delegates in the 2016 Olympics, and now, there are 15 athletes so far.

With about a month to go before the biggest stage of them all, let’s hope more athletes get to qualify and showcase their athletic talents to the world. It would be a fantastic moral boost to Pinoys around the globe, and of course, it’s awesome to see the creme dela creme of the sports world go at it once again at the Olympics.
