Filipinos living in South California would want to take a stroll, as utility boxes standing on street corners now feature artistic renditions of Filipino words, one for each letter of our native Abakada alphabet.
The “We Live Here” Abakada Flash Card Project was spearheaded by South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN), a multi-racial community organization based in San Francisco, California, and other advocacy groups from the same area. It aims to not only provide a glimpse into the Philippine heritage through language, but also highlight the presence of Filipinos living in San Francisco and empower the community altogether.

The designs were drawn by San Francisco-based artist Mel Vera Cruz, while the Baybayin scripts were translated by artist Kristian Kabuay.
Here’s hoping that the project branches out to more efforts of exposure and enlightening Filipinos and foreigners alike about the beauty of Philippine culture!
