Even while in the middle of the pandemic, work to rehabilitate the previously dilapidated Lagusnilad persists, and it looks like it’s going to be open to the public by end of August.
This was the announcement of Manila’s local government through its public information office chief Julius Leonen. Despite its early reveal, the Manila LGU proudly shares that they didn’t spare a dime in making the once-iconic landmark a reflection of the “smart city” that Manila aspires to be.
Anyone who has ever passed through the old Lagusnilad can attest to the utter differences shown in these photos from Mayor Isko Moreno and renders from the Manila Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW):
Once finished, the new underground walkway will feature a motion-sensor and touch-screen interactive info desk that will provide information about Manila’s history, map, tourist spots, and its various transportation lines. It will also be adorned with vertical gardens, natural trimmings and trellises, stone walls, and beautiful murals and artwork.
Even the beloved book nook, Books Underground, will be back, and in better shape too. In support, the local government not only provided new bookshelves but also allowed it to operate as the sole business in the whole Lagusnilad.
Issues of security, flooding, and vagrants? The local government got those covered too. Aside from state-of-the-art security devices, there will also be security personnel stationed along the walkway 24/7.
Overall, the iconic walkway will don a look akin to Intramuros’ colonial Spanish ambiance with modern touches, a design arranged by city architect Antonio Toledo.
