Made Easy With Bokashi: Start Turning Food Waste Into Compost With Green Space

In an ideal world, there would be no food waste in landfills.

But in reality, food waste, or biodegradable waste in general, takes up a lot of space in landfills–even more than plastic waste! Just imagine: 1/3 of the total food produced ends up being wasted. And out of this, 50 percent comes from households.

One way to combat this is to start composting at home and ultimately, divert food waste from getting into landfills. This is what Green Space, a food waste composting company, hopes to achieve. “Our mission is to turn people away from their old ways: #FromLandFillersToLandHealers.”

It’s true that composting at home could be challenging if there’s limited space in your garden or backyard–but only if you’re thinking about traditional composting methods. With Bokashi, even without a spacious backyard, you can start composting your biodegradable waste with the help of only two things: a bucket and Bokashi bran.

Bokashi composting

In recent years, Bokashi composting has gained popularity because it makes composting food scraps and other kitchen waste possible for people who live in smaller spaces, such as apartments and condominiums.

Bokashi translates to “fermented organic matter” in Japanese and was developed by Dr. Teruo Higa, who also discovered Effective Microorganisms (E.M.) in 1982. So even though it’s called “Bokashi composting,” it’s technically a fermentation process.

To start Bokashi composting, you have to mix food scraps with Bokashi bran or E.M. in a bucket with a spigot, seal it with an air-tight lid, and keep it somewhere away from direct sunlight. When done correctly, you’ll be able to produce bokashi tea (a nutrient-rich drink for your house plants!) and a fermented bran-and-food-waste mixture. After 10 to 14 days, you can already use the fermented mixture as fertilizer in your garden or compost pit, or donate it to groups that collect compost (if you have neither at home.)

But if you really can’t do it yourself, they also offer a composting service called “Book-a-Bucket”: Just collect your food waste in a bucket and they’ll pick it up when it’s ready! You collect, they compost.
