Pinay golfer Yuka Saso soars to number 6 in world rankings

Less than a month after her stint in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Pinay golfing sensation Yuka Saso is making waves once again. The 20-year old golfer hit another career milestone as she reached her highest world ranking yet at No. 6, as per Rappler.com

The Filipina-Japanese athlete jumped three places higher and tallied a total of 203.20 behind world No. 5 Lydia Ko of New Zealand. In case you’re wondering, Olympic gold medalist Nelly Korda of the United States is still on top with 10.33 average points while Koreans Jin-young Ko (8.42), In Bee Park (7.35), and Sei Young Kim (7.07) are second, third, and fourth, respectively.

Her recent Olympic campaign placed her in the world number 8 position. In the tournament, she finished with a total of 274 (-10) through four rounds.

Saso has been very busy competing recently. Saso is fresh from two competitions, the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open, where she finished in joint 15th, and the 2021 AIG Women’s Open, where she exited the tournament at 39th place. She was in title contention in the first half of the AIG tournament as she stayed inside the top 10, but fell out of the running in the second half.

Luckily for Saso, golf is one of the sports that have been able to resume international tournaments amid the pandemic. Well, it’s easy to follow social distancing while playing golf after all.

Given her recent successes, will Saso earn the coveted number one spot? She’s only 20 years old, so a lot is still possible. Professional golfers get to play in elite tournaments for a very long time. Plus, she still has a lot of tournaments to compete in this year alone. Basically, anything can happen.
