For her social activism and charitable deeds to the needy amid the pandemic, 25-year-old Shawntel Nicole Martinez Nieto became the first Filipino to receive The Diana Award, a prestigious prize made in memory of the late Princess Diana.

The Diana Award 2021’s Roll of Honors includes some 400 inspiring young leaders between 9 to 25 who embody the principles of patronage and are seen to continue the legacy of the late Princess Diana who herself lived a life of charity and philanthropic work. This year, Nieto joins the cream of the crop in a ceremony made more special due to its commemoration of the Princess of Wales’ 60th birthday.

Nieto received the award for her work in founding and organizing the One Cainta Food Program (OCFP). The non-profit program aims to provide support for frontliners, essential workers, and communities in need who have been encumbered by lockdown measures forced by the pandemic. According to Nieto, the foundation has thus far given 1.1 million worth of goods to about 350,000 individuals in Cainta and six other cities.

Nieto was also recognized for her efforts towards sustainability as the president of the Society of Sustainability Practitioners (SSP) of Cainta.

“My heart is full,” Nieto told ANCX about receiving the award. “I’m filled with gratitude for the recognition I’ve received, pride for having finally seen the name of the Philippines included in the Diana Award’s Roll of Honor, and so, so much humility.”

Aside from joining an elite circle of young icons, Nieto is also afforded the opportunity to take part in a mentoring program “geared towards fostering the growth of the recipients in the area of leadership,” ANCX reports.

Also participating in the proceedings was Prince Harry, who honored his mother through a heartfelt message.

“I’m truly honored to be celebrating your work, your commitment to change making, and the vital role you’ve taken on representing a new generation of humanitarianism,” the Duke of Sussex said.

“Thank you for inspiring us with your brilliance, your determination, and your compassion. Your actions hold the potential to leave a life-changing impact.”
