Pope Francis supports civil union laws for same-sex couples

Pope Francis, who has always been vocal about his support for same-sex union, told in a documentary titled Francesco by Evgeny Afineevsky that although he does not endorse same-sex marriage, he is supporting for homosexuals to be protected by civil union laws.

“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it,” he said.

“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that,” he added.

The former archbishop of Buenos Aires always thought of the LGBT+ community as children of God and his ‘Who am I to judge?’ statement in 2013 has since become famous.

“If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge? he said at the time.

The Catholic church believes homosexuality is not sinful but homosexual acts are. Pope Francis becomes the first pontiff to endorse same-sex civil union.
