On Tuesday, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairperson James Jimenez announced on Twitter that the COMELEC en banc has unanimously approved the proposal to extend the voter registration period to three more weeks.

COMELEC Commission Rowena Guanzon also took to Twitter to inform the public of the schedule of the extension, which will commence the week following the last day for filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC), from October 11 to 30.

The committee on suffrage and electoral reforms of the House of Representatives approved House Bill 10261, which sought to stretch the voting registration period by a month. Lawmakers in the Senate likewise swiftly and absolutely approved Senate Bill No. 2408, a simple and straightforward bill that states “the registration of voters for the 2022 National and Local Elections is hereby extended to October 31, 2021.”

Following the approved extension, COMELEC Chairman Sheriff Abas went on air to announce that the en banc “will formalize the extension of the voter registration,” and urged those who has yet to register as voters to take the chance.

“Avail the extension. Huwag naman natin hintayin ulit na kung saan ‘yung deadline, doon tayo magpaparehistro,” said Abas to CNN’s The Source.

COMELEC recently revealed that there are now 62 million registered voters out of the 73 million projected voting population by the Philippine Statistic Authority for the upcoming May 2022 election.
