Sony can’t sell the new PS5 in India because a man from Delhi owns the trademark

Last September, Sony announced that the much-awaited PlayStation 5 will be available for pre-order in United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea ahead of its launch on November 12, while pre-order dates for other countries will follow.

To be specific, other countries except for India, where Sony has yet to reveal the rates and availability for their newest console. This is due to a rather strange issue: Sony doesn’t own the rights to the PS5 name in India.

As revealed by The Mako Reactor, a guy by the name of Hitesh Aswani from Delhi, India, beat Sony to the trademark by three months. Aswani filed the trademark last October 29, 2019, and thus owns the full rights to the name within Indian territory.

Currently, the trademark has been tagged as “opposed” with Sony contesting the claim. Of course, the tech giant expects to win the trademark back; however, the release of the PlayStation 5 has already been delayed many times as it is, and the last thing Sony needs right now is an individual beating them to the trademark of their own creation.

Hassle aside, let’s tip our hats off to this guy from Delhi for beating Sony at their own game (no pun intended)!
