Rule and Gebbie round up the Philippines’ Tokyo Olympics roster which now includes 19 athletes.

Philippine swimmers Remedy Alexis Rule and Luke Michael Gebbie are now going to the Tokyo Olympics after earning the allotted universality places, the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) confirms.

The two tankers were afforded the spot after garnering the highest number of FINA points at designated events during the qualification period.

Filipino-American Rule, who got 830 FINA points in the women’s 200-meter butterfly event, will compete in the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter freestyle events. Aside from bagging a bronze, Rule also set a new national mark of minutes, 9.58 seconds at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Iowa last March. She also won two silvers and two bronzes during the 30th Southeast Asian Games held in the Philippines back in 2019.

Meanwhile, Melbourne-based Gebbie, who secured 828 FINA points in the 100-meter freestyle of the 18th FINA World Championships held in Korea in 2019, will see action in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events in the Games. Gebbie not only punched his ticket to the Olympics but also set a new national record of 49.94 seconds during the event. During the 30th SEA Games, Gebbie also made a splash by winning a silver and a bronze.

Previously falling short of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, both Rule and Gebbie were awarded two events instead of the usual one due to the extraordinary circumstances set off by the global pandemic.

Lani Velasco, president of the Philippine Swimming Incorporated, expressed her support for the couple of qualifying athletes in a statement issued on Thursday, July 1. “We thank them for their continuing dedication and sacrifice to serve our country well and we wish them all the best at the coming Olympic Games!” Velasco said.

Rule and Gebbie’s qualification has completed the country’s talents to the Tokyo Olympics which now includes gymnast Carlos Yulo; pole vaulter EJ Obiena; taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa; skateboarder Margielyn Didal; weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Elreen Ando; shooter Jayson Valdez; boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam; sprinter Kristina Knott; judoka Kiyomi Watanabe; and golfers Yuka Saso, Bianca Pagdanganan, and Juvic Pagunsan.

The country’s contingent to the upcoming Summer Games sees the biggest pool of athletes since the 2000 Sydney Olympiad when the Philippines sent 20 to the quadrennial event.
