Calling all students and alumni of the College of Holy Spirit Manila: you might want to schedule a get-together soon. Through a recent statement issued by its officials, the Mendiola-based school has announced that come School Year 2021-2022, the institution would “voluntarily cease operations,” citing hardships posed by the ongoing pandemic.

Other schools managed by the Mission Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Spirit will, however, continue their business as usual.

The decision did not come easy to the school’s directors. Last October 28, Sr. Carmelita Victoria of the Mission Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Spirit said in a letter directed to the CHSM body that the school has “faced an increasingly challenging environment resulting from (i) government policies on K-12; (ii) free tuition in state colleges and universities, local universities and colleges, and state-run technical and vocational institutions; and (iii) the significant increase in public school teachers’ salaries compared to their private school counterparts.”

“The recent COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation. The reduction or loss in family income, mobility restrictions and social distancing requirements, and the new demands of distance learning have adversely affected enrolment, not only in CHSM, but in most private schools as well,” her letter added.

The College of Holy Spirit Manila is just one of 865 private schools that has made the tough call to close down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data collected by the Department of Education.
