If you’ve ever wondered what wacky achievement Japan has unlocked nowadays, here’s your due memo: they just finished testing their newly-built 60-feet, 28-ton humanoid robot named RX-78 Gundam Robot in the Japanese city of Yokohama. Yep, a real, walking, functioning, giant robot.
90s-born Anime fans would probably recognize these massive robots at first glance. Based off of the popular Mecha Anime, “Mobile Suit Gundam,” the life-size replica was built with 200 separate pieces of steel and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, and 24 degrees of complete free motion.
This means it’s able to walk, kneel, and even gesture with its mechanical arms untethered, as seen on a video shot from a port outside the Gundam Factory in Fukuyama last September 21.
The first time people heard of Japan’s plans to build the RX-78 Gundam Robot was back in 2014. It was supposed to preview last July in a Special Experience event, but it had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
Let’s just hope that Japan isn’t secretly preparing for a kaiju invasion and this Gundam is just for attraction.
