Why Malaysia won’t be joining this year’s Miss Universe pageant

For the same reason that 18 countries withdrew their participation in last year’s pageant, Malaysia has opted to sit out the 70th edition of the Miss Universe set to take place this December.

In a statement, the Miss Universe Malaysia organization explained that they will not be able to send a delegate to the international competition after the 2021 Miss Universe Malaysia pageant was canceled due to “the worsening COVID-19 situation.”

We have therefore declined the invitation to this year’s pageant and regretfully would not be able to hold a local Miss Universe Malaysia pageant this year,” said the organization.

“We wish all delegates the best of luck at the international competition, and look forward to participating again in the near future.”

During the 2020 Miss Universe, Malaysia was represented by Francisca Luhong James.

In the same event, 18 nations were likewise unable to view for the crown due to logistical difficulties brought about by the ongoing pandemic, including Angola, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Georgia, Germany, Guam, Kenya, Lithuania, Mongolia, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saint Lucia, Sierra Leone, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, and the US Virgin Islands. This marked the first time that Germany did not compete since the inaugural pageant in 1952.

The postponement of the 2020 Miss Universe due to the pandemic also led to South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi becoming the longest-reigning titleholder in the pageant’s history.

This year, reigning Miss Universe Andrea Meza is set to crown her successor at the 2021 Miss Universe pageant to be hosted by Israel in December.
