During the early morning hours on Sunday, 16, fire razed the state-run Philippine General Hospital along Taft Avenue in Manila.

The fire, which started in an operating room on the facility’s third floor, reached the second alarm by 1 AM, which forced medical staff and frontline workers to evacuate patients, including 12 babies from the neonatal intensive care unit who have been transferred to the nearby Sta. Ana Hospital.

The fire was officially put out at around 5:41 AM. As of today, the hospital’s emergency room remains closed to cater to some 100 bedridden patients who have been evacuated from the upper floors. Surgical operations have also been suspended until further notice.

While it’s fortunate that no one was hurt from the incident, hospital management now faces the tall task of recuperating all the essential supplies that went up in flames. How can you send your help to PGH?

There is currently an ongoing effort spearheaded by the PGH and the University of the Philippines Manila College of Medicine to collate both financial and in-kind contributions.

These institutions also warn the public to beware of posts calling for monetary donations, as they may not be sanctioned by PGH itself.

If you don’t have mobile banking means or you can’t go out to send your donations, don’t fret; GCash, through its GCash for Good initiative, has also launched a donation drive to help raise funds for the fire-damaged facility.

Simply scan the QR code above or by tapping the “Pay Bills” option in the GCash application and coursing your monetary donation to #GCashGivesBack. Any amount will go a long way, and every donation made through the app will be sent straight to PGH and the PGH Medical Foundation, Inc.

PGH is one of the country’s selected COVID-19 referral centers, dedicating around 130 beds to virus-infected patients while still continuing to cater to patients with other ailments.
