A ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ animated film is coming, and here’s what we know so far

“New school, old cheese.”

Greg Heffley is going back to school, but this time, as a cartoon version of himself — the Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated filmwhich is due to drop on Disney+ this December, has released on Friday the first teaser poster for the upcoming flick based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Jeff Kinney.

The first poster gives us a glimpse of the high school humor that the book series was known for. In close-up are Greg’s feet standing in front of a smelly slice of moldy cheese, with his peers’ pair of sneakers surrounding him.

Kinney himself will serve as writer and producer for the upcoming film to be directed by Futurama director Swinton Scott. While the exact voice ensemble is still under wraps, we do know that Brady Noon (Boardwalk Empire), Ethan William Childress (Mixed-ish), and Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley) are onboard.

“This film feels like the book come to life, and it’s exciting to see Greg Heffley and his family and friends in their fully-animated glory,” said Kinney about the forthcoming film. “It is the Wimpy World in a way no one has seen before. Working on this movie, I feel like we have been sitting on a wonderful secret. I can’t wait to finally share it with the world!”

The animated film will serve as a sequel to the previous adaptations of the Wimpy Kid stories, all of which have come in the form of well-received live-action films from 20th Century Fox. It was also revealed during last December’s Investor event by Disney that the film will get the 3D treatment, with an art style that faithfully imitates the spindly character limbs seen in Kinney’s Wimpy Kid book covers.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid debuts on Disney+ on December 3.
