CBS To Replace “The Late Late Show With James Corden” With “@midnight” Reboot

It’s going to be hard to say goodbye to the show’s Carpool Karaoke segment.

“The Late Late Show” comes to an end with James Corden’s exit this year. Reportedly, CBS will replace the 28-year-long running show with a reboot of Comedy Central game show “@midnight.”

Corden, who served as host of “The Late Late Show” since March 2015, announced his departure in April 2022. He said that he would only stay for another year.

“I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way,” Corden said last year. “I always want to love making it, and I really think in a year from now, that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there.”

Corden replaced Craig Ferguson, who led the talk show from 2005 to 2014. Craig Kilborn hosted the show from 1999 to 2004, but Tom Snyder started it all in 1995.

Plans to do @midnight reboot

According to Variety, replacing Corden’s show with a “@midnight” reboot would cut “tens of millions of dollars in production costs.” Between 2013 and 2017, @midnight aired 600 episodes on Comedy Central.

CBS reportedly had considered five distinct concepts to replace Corden’s show. Fulwell73, the production company behind Corden’s show, and Ben Winston, a producer of “Late Late Show,” were among those giving CBS ideas. Sources say Fulwell became less engaged in discussions as CBS’ plans for production budget cuts became more public.

Even though “@midnight” might get a reboot, its original host Chris Hardwick isn’t likely to rerun it. According to reports, CBS is looking into a female host while pushing to ensure that the studio’s talents come from diverse backgrounds.

According to Deadline, Stephen Colbert will serve as executive producer of “@midnight” with Funny or Die, the company behind the original comedy on Comedy Central.
