Carla Abellana Says “Voltes V: Legacy” Came At A Perfect Time In Her Life

Carla Abellana started taping for “Voltes V: Legacy” at the time her marital woes came out

“Voltes V: Legacy” came at a perfect time for Carla Abellana.

It was in April 2022 when Abellana started taping for the Kapuso primetime series, where she plays the role of Dr. Mary Ann Armstrong, the mother of Steve, Big Bert, and Little Jon Armstrong.

During that time, rumors had already spread that she and ex-husband Tom Rodriguez had broken up after a few months of getting married, which was later confirmed. At the time, the former couple had not spoken up about their status.

Abellana and Rodriguez would later release statements confirming their divorce.

During Abellana’s Zoom pocket press conference for “Voltes V Legacy” on April 13, FreebieMNL asked her about “Voltes V Legacy” coming at the right time when she was going through life’s trials.

She says, “Actually it did, it did come at a perfect time kasi I mentioned kanina na medyo may lapse of time ng kaunti, there was a few months from the time na I heard about the role of Dr. Mary Ann Armstrong to the first taping day ko.”

Admittedly, Abellana was anxious when she first stepped into the set for the first time again after all the life events that happened to her.

She explains, “Definitely I admit I had a few…hindi naman hesitations but a bit anxious kasi if ever, yun ang aking magiging first taping or show to be part of after getting married and all that. So, back to work, medyo ilang months din yung lumipas and then, of course, given the circumstance, whatever blew up—all the speculations, all the issues na lumalabas,” referring to her marital woes with Rodriguez.

Abellana continues, “So, talagang mangangapa ka and magwo-worry, imposibleng hindi ka maging anxious. But, yes, it definitely came at a perfect time kasi hindi ako hindi ready, hindi rin naman ako yung reading-ready na kumbaga, I was ready, I was eager to go back to work nga noong time na yun. But, at the same time, I was still in a very vulnerable state which was also okay kasi important din yun sa amin as actors.”

Carla Abellana in a vulnerable state

Abellana is proud to say she was able to use her vulnerability in the dramatic scenes she had for “Voltes V: Legacy.”

Nagamit ko rin naman yun and talagang yung timing, sobrang perfect noong timing para sa akin kasi excited akong makabalik ng trabaho, makapag-taping and then vulnerable but hindi naman yung super sensitive or anything. Vulnerable just enough na I get in touch with my emotions again and makapag-focus ako sa ibang tao other than myself, yung character naman yung aking magiging focus. So, tamang tama lang.”

So, perfect lang yung time basically for me.”

Abellana is also happy that everything went well during her taping.

She narrates, “Yes, definitely, yung aking unang taping days pa lang, everyone was so welcoming. Ang ganda ng energy sa set ng ‘Voltes V: Legacy,’ sobrang maalaga po yung production. Excited na excited po ang aming director, even I was so excited na na-expose po ako sa ganung environment—seeing the sets and the costumes, working with my co-actors, parang isang napakagandang change of scenery, change of environment. Ang galing, alalay na alalay po ang lahat, ang gagaling po ng mga artista. I love working with the kids most especially.”

With “Voltes V: Legacy” being a hard show to do, Abellana admits the whole process was very tedious. “Though very tedious talaga, parang suicide talagang i-tape yung mga eksena lalo na yung mga big scenes, parang hindi ho namin gaanong nararamdaman yung pagod kasi para kaming naglalaro, ine-enjoy na lang namin and mabilis naman pong tumatakbo yung oras.”

Carla Abellana reunites with Dennis Trillo

“Voltes V Legacy” also serves as Carla Abellana’s reunion with Dennis Trillo, with whom she has worked on several projects. Trillo plays Ned Armstrong, the father of Steve, Big Bert, and Little Jon, who are members of the Voltes V team.

Of this, Abellana confirms it is “definitely easy” to work with him.

She says, “Given na yan that he is one of the best if not the best leading man out there in the industry. Walang hesitation, I would gladly work with Dennis over and over. Napaka-komportable ko nang katrabaho si Dennis, ka-eksena si Dennis. He’s still the very dedicated, passionate, quiet, serious actor that he is. Pero yung pagkaka-execute niya ng mga role niya, talagang flawless. It’s one of the things that make your job easier, working with someone easier.”

What should viewers look forward to in her team-up with Trillo in “Voltes V: Legacy?”

Ito mahirap, kasi Dennis being a Boazanian, mai-in love siya sa isang human being. So, medyo iba I guess yung pairing na makikita nila. Iba yung partnership yung tandem kasi paano ba magwo-work yun na isang alien, e, ma-in love sa isang human being. So, more on si Mary Ann Armstrong ay nagiging guide sa kanya, nangangapa pa si Ned Armstrong as a human being, and mas makikita nila yung love story talaga. May ganung perspective or angle dito sa ‘Voltes V: Legacy,” paano na-develop yung kwento ng dalawang mag-asawa.”

“Voltes V: Legacy” is set to hit the TV screens on May 8, 2023 on GMA Telebabad. A special cinema screening, titled “Voltes V: Legacy: The Cinema Experience” will run in selected SM theaters from April 19 to 25, 2023.
