Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom just dropped on Netflix this weekend, and everyone’s talking about it. While a huge part of it is because of the poignant and layered story and the powerful cast, many people are also lamenting how it’s Chadwick Boseman’s last performance.
Boseman was completely stunning and compelling in the movie as he always is in every film he’s been in, and it is his last live-action role. However, Ma Rainey isn’t technically his swan song. That title goes to his voice acting performance for T’Challa in Marvel’s new Disney+ series, What If…?
Disney announced a huge slate of exciting new movies and shows for Marvel. What If…? was one of them, and came with a trailer. This anthology series will explore an alternate reality within the Marvel universe – what if Peggy Carter took the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, for example – per episode. One of the confirmed realities that the show will explore so far is “What if Yondu took T’Challa from Wakanda and the young prince became Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill?”
It seems like every character confirmed for the series will be voiced by their respective actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, and T’Challa isn’t an exception. When What If…? drops in 2021, we will get to hear Chadwick Boseman reprise the iconic role.
The trailer seems to only show one episode featuring T’Challa, but sources say that Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, has confirmed that Boseman has recorded multiple episodes of the series already.
Chadwick Boseman passed away on August 28, 2020 after a four-year battle with colon cancer. People around the world mourned his death as he had become the face of breaking boundaries and showing the power of diversity in superhero narratives in Hollywood when he took on the role of T’Challa in Black Panther.
While Boseman is so much more than just T’Challa, there’s no denying that this is the role that introduced his passion and genius as an artist and person to all of us. So, Marvel fans are thankful that they get to see him play the character that has inspired millions one last time.
