Celebrity mom Danica Sotto-Pingris admits that raising teenagers can be pretty challenging, especially since they are in their transition phase.
Danica has three kids with her husband Marc Pingris. Two of them are now in their teenage phase: Mic, 15, and Caela, 11.
In January 2023, Danica gave birth to their youngest child, Jean Luc.
In a recent interview with FreebieMNL at the Marie France treatment center in Makati, Danica acknowledged that raising three kids in different age groups can be difficult, especially in time management and addressing their needs, especially the teenagers.
The former actress shared, “Siguro, parang ang mahirap lang na part is they have super different activities na.
“Siyempre, may mga activities na hindi mo pwedeng isama yung baby, di ba, doon sa mga gusto nilang gawin? So, doon lang ako minsan nagsa-struggle na, kunwari, I wanna spend time with the two kids out.
“So, minsan, iwan si baby, di ba? Dahil kunwari, medyo matao masyado sa place na yun.”
“Pero because nga they are older, medyo nasu-spoil din talaga si baby na talagang inaalagaan nila.
“’Tapos kailangan ko lang talaga ng conscious effort na hatiin yung oras ko sa kanila kasi iba-iba na yung needs nila, e. Like, yung isa 15, 12, ‘tapos biglang [may] mag-te-10 months. So, iba na yung mga trip nila, e. Iba na lalo teenager, naku po! Iba na.”
Just like every parent, Danica acknowledges the presence of gadgets as a blessing and a challenge.
She explained, “Siyempre, yung kalaban mo diyan is, as much as technology is a blessing, minsan nakakagulo sometimes.
“Like, kapag nasasobrahan sila, let’s say, sa gadget, sa phone or kunwari, instead na kakausapin ka, nasa phone. So, you just have to keep on reminding lang. Kahit makulitan sila, bahala kayo. One day, maintindihan niyo rin ito.”
But what Danica finds strange in their current situation is how her kids have become independent.
“’Tapos, kung dati, sila yung naghahanap sa ‘yo, baligtad na, ikaw ngayon ang maghahanap sa kanila kasi may mga kaibigan na sila, e.
“Kaya na nila na very independent na sila. Kaya na nilang gawin yung mga homework nila nang di ka na nila kailangan. So, ikaw na ngayon ang mag-i-initiate. Kung dati, kahit grocery, hindi papaiwan yan, ngayon, ‘Uy, samahan niyo naman ako.’ Baliktad na.
“So, nag-iiba-iba talaga yung dynamics, e. Iba-ibang season.”
Danica’s conversations with her kids have also changed as they mature, particularly with her firstborn who is now in the puberty stage.
Now, Danica has become more open to Mic about intimate relationships.
She shared, “Actually, with my son, ang conversations ko sa kanya, no filter na. Talagang I talk to him as if I’m talking to a girl friend or ka-age ko. Yung talagang hindi na pa-cute yung mga terms.
“I really use the terms na talaga, if it’s a sexual term, kailangan sinasabi mo na. Kasi number one, tinuturo sa school. Pangalawa, technology. Baka nga naunahan ka na, e.
“So, ako, ang ginawa namin ni Marc, noong medyo mas bata pa sila, we really talked to them about it. Sinabi na talaga namin.”
Danica makes sure that she talks to her kids in a way that is relatable to their age.
“Siyempre, in a scientific way mo ipapaliwanag. ‘Tapos ngayon, medyo mas parang barkada na yung usap niyo na ito yung mga pwedeng mangyari. Ito yung mga dapat mong iwasan.
“Ako, lagi ko lang sinasabi, ‘Hindi na kita mababantayan, iba na. But it’s still up to you.”
Danica, however, clarifies that Mic has not shown interest yet in any girl. She just wants to guide her kids when the time comes.
“Wala pa rin naman nililigawan, but nandun lang ang reminders ni Mommy lagi na be responsible at saka huwag magpadala sa mga—kasi ang mga hormones ng mga kabataan, huwag magpapadala sa tukso. Tukso talaga! Or peer pressure.
“Lahat naman yan, dini-discuss namin. So, siyempre ako, hindi mo naman talaga maanong perfect ang buhay, e, basta hindi ka nagkulang sa [paalala].”
