What’s Next For David Licauco After “Maria Clara At Ibarra?”

David Licauco is doing another teleserye with Barbie Forteza!

David Licauco now prepares for his next project after the success of GMA Network’s “Maria Clara At Ibarra.”

Licauco is the breakout star of the series after his team-up with Barbie Forteza had good reception and earned a lot of fans. The series ends its run this Friday, February 24.

But it seems like their team-up is not bound to end anytime soon.

During Licauco’s press conference as an ambassador of Blue Water Day Spa on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Marco Polo, Ortigas, FreebieMNL asked what his next project will be.

He reveals, “I think I’m doing a teleserye again with Barbie. Meron din kaming movies na gagawin ni Barbie.”

When it comes to his projects after “Maria Clara at Ibarra,” Licauco only says with a smile, “I trust my manager and GMA. So, I’m just an actor.”

Is he not going to take a break after the show ends?

Laughing, Licauco answers: “I have two days break and then after that, balik ulit sa trabaho.” He then adds, “Siguro sa teleserye, I’d like to have like two weeks break pero siyempre, kung nandiyan na yung opportunity, who am I to say no?”

David Licauco on his new-found popularity

During the press conference, Licauco was also asked by the press how he finds his popularity being the breakout star of “Maria Clara at Ibarra.”

He shyly admits, “Well, it’s honestly a bit overwhelming for me kasi I would say I’m an introverted person. But I’m already here. So, I’m just taking it day by day and bahala na. Yeah!”

But is he pressured to sustain the popularity?

Licauco responds, “I just don’t want to think about it. But sometimes, I talk to my manager kung ano yung next plan and ano yung pwede naming gawin. Kasi siyempre, it’s hard to sustain a career like this and I don’t want to be like a one-hit wonder kind of success. For me, I still study acting and I still have to improve on that. And of course, taking care of my body and working out. I just have to wait for the next project or opportunity.”

But Licauco also admits that people will accept him as a romantic hero. In fact, he is now touted by his home network as “Pambansang Ginoo.”

He says, “Well, nagulat ako na ganun yung success ng ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’ because at the start, I was just a supporting character, e. Tapos eventually, naging main character siya. Mas doon ako nagulat na sobrang tinanggap ng mga tao and the hype was very on top talaga.

Licauco started his career as first runner-up in Mr. Chinatown in 2014. He did a few projects with ABS-CBN before finally signing with GMA Network in 2016. Some of his past shows include “Mulawin vs. Ravena,” “Sa Piling Ni Nanay,” “Kapag Nahati Ang Puso,” and “TODA One I Love.” He also headlined the 2019 film “Because I Love You.”

Licauco first experienced being on the top billing on TV via the romantic series “Heartful Cafe.” He also played one of Forteza’s leading men in “Mano Po Legacy: The Family Fortune.”

Aside from “Maria Clara at Ibarra,” Licauco currently headlines the movie “Without You” with Shaira Diaz as his partner.
