‘Dexter’ revival series reveals first-look trailer and premiere date

Dexter Morgan is ready to go on his second killing spree.

Emmy winner Michael C. Hall will once again step into the shoes of vigilante serial killer Dexter Morgan for the revival series Dexter: New Blood, which revealed a premiere date and its first full teaser trailer during last Sunday’s Comic-Con@Home.

Returning to its original network in Showtime, Dexter: New Blood will consist of 10 new episodes, with long-time showrunner Clyde Phillips overseeing the renewed mystery-drama series. Phillips, who supervised the original series’ first four seasons, also confirmed that former cast members Jennifer Carpenter and John Lithgow will be diving back into their deceased counterparts Deb Morgan and Arthur Mitchell, also known as the Trinity Killer.

“I will say that there will be some returning cast members from the original series that will make some people’s brains explode,” said the showrunner.

Set 10 years after the closing moments of the original seriesthe minute-and-a-half trailer unveiled by Showtime shows Hall’s Dexter assume a new identity: Jim Lindsay, an alias which Phillips says is a homage to Jeff Lindsay, the author of the books on which the show was based. In this new life, he doesn’t work as a forensic technician analyzing bloodstain patterns anymore. Instead, Lindsay is now living a normal life as a shopkeeper in Oregon — or at least he’s trying to, until a string of incidents slowly pulls the “dark passenger” out from within him.

Speaking as a panelist in the recent Comic-Con@Home, Hall echoed every the general sentiment that every fan of the show has had since the original series ended: that it was about time to see what happened to Dexter.

“It never felt quite right in terms of the story that was presented or in terms of the timing. But, I think, along with everybody on this panel and along with everybody who’s ever watched the show and is a fan of the show, I myself have also wondered what the hell happened to this guy,” Hall said per Variety. “And I think enough has time has passed and the storytelling opportunities were a lot more interesting for having more time between the end and now.”

True followers of the bloodthirsty forensic technician would recall that the eighth and final season of the show ended with Dexter faking his own death and hiding out as a lumberjack. For fans, this leaves a window wide open for Dexter to return and explore other possibilities.

Nonetheless, Hall was not keen to regard the revival series as “Dexter Season 9.”

“This not the next moment after the lumberjack moment. … We pick up with Dexter in another place, in another world, actually, as far away from Miami as possible,” Phillips said on Hall’s perspective of the show.

The 10-episode revival series Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime on November 7.
