Pinoy’s talent and charisma shone brightly at the Cannes 2023 big screen and red carpet
The Philippine Cinema has reached another milestone as several films, producers, and directors became part of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Select Filipino films were included in the Marché du Film (film market)—Festival de Cannes or the Cannes Film Festival this 2023 from May 16 to 27, 2023 in France.
The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) led the Philippine delegation to the festival. Among the included Filipino films in the Marché du Film this year were “TOPAKK” directed by Richard Somes, “Her Locket” directed by J.E. Tiglao, crime-thriller Grace by Ato Bautista, and the musical film “Ako si Ninoy” or “I am Ninoy” by Vince Tañada.
Several Filipino films also took part in the numerous programs of Marché du Film this year, which includes “Tens Across the Borders” by Chan Sze-Wei which was co-produced by the Philippines, Singapore, Germany, and the United Kingdom; and “Asog” by Sean Devlin, which is a documentary film included in the Cannes Docs, a program that showcases documentary films.
Filipino celebrities at Cannes
Pinay beauty queens Kylie Verzosa and Pia Wurtzbach both looked exquisite during their debut appearance on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival.
On May 16, 2023, Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa captivated everyone on the opening day of the Cannes Film Festival, as she walked the red carpet in a jaw-dropping custom gown designed by Mark Bumgarner.
For Kylie, attending the premiere was a dream come true.
Kylie confidently showcased her assets in a sophisticated black gown, accentuated by sultry side cutouts. The beauty-queen actress graced the premiere of the highly anticipated opening film “Jeanne du Barry,” directed by the acclaimed French actress and filmmaker Maïwenn Le Besco, known simply as Maïwenn.
Equally mesmerizing was Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, who attended the premiere of the movie “Le Retour – Homecoming” in a fully-sequined red gown also masterfully crafted by Mark.
Her ensemble showcased a structured strapless asymmetrical bustier that perfectly complemented the gracefully draped long skirt, creating a truly enchanting red-carpet look.
Walking on the red carpet at Cannes on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, Pia felt like she had stepped into a movie, immersing herself in the magical atmosphere of the festival.
That day, Pia shared the red carpet with esteemed celebrities, such as Gemma Chan, Viola Davis, and fellow former Miss Universe titleholder Iris Mittenaere.
