FKA Twigs Opens Up About Ex Shia LaBeouf

Last December, Shia LaBeouf was the subject of multiple headlines after being fired from Olivia Wilde’s film, Don’t Worry Darling due to his bad behavior on set. As a testament to his shady character, his singer/songwriter ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs talked candidly about their relationship that lasted for nearly a year.

“It’s a miracle I came out alive,” the British crooner whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett said. She explained that LaBeouf used “calculated, systematic, tricky, and maze-like” on her to keep her under control. “If you put a frog in a boiling pot of water, that frog is going to jump out straightaway,” the 33-year old recounted. “Whereas if you put a frog in cool water and heat it up slowly, that frog is going to boil to death. That was my experience being with [LaBeouf].”

Thankfully, she was able to survive that traumatizing phase of her life with some luck. “I think it’s luck,” she admitted. “I honestly wish I could say that I found some strength and I saw this light. I wish I could say, ‘[It is] a testament to my strong character,’ or ‘It’s the way my mother raised me.’ It’s none of that. It’s pure luck that I’m not in that situation anymore.”

Twigs and LaBeouf met in 2018 on the set of the film Honey Boy, LaBeouf’s semi autobiographical story inspired by his traumatic experience as a former Disney child star. They dated for about 9 months, splitting up in May 2019.

Through opening up about her experience, Twigs hopes to help the cult of silence surrounding intimate partner violence (IPV). She also shared that her healing is still a work in progress, and coming forward about the trauma is helping her get better.

Twigs currently has a lot of exciting projects on the pipeline, including a song collaboration with fellow British singer Dua Lipa. After what she’s been through, it’s nice to know things are going well for her.
