Shanti Dope And Flow G’s “Kamusta” Reminds Us To Check On Our Friends

These rappers know mental health is a serious topic.

Shanti Dope and Flow G dropped a joint track last May 28. Unlike rappers who focus on living large, they aimed to promote social awareness. Their collaboration “Kamusta” deals with mental health.

According to Shanti Dope, the idea for the song came from their producer Klumcee. Aside from creating the beat and melodies, he also wrote the chorus.

Shanti Dope says his main problem with songwriting is writer’s block. So he sent some stuff to Flow G. After a bit of back and forth, they decided to finish the song.

“Kamusta” is straightforward. It tells the story of a person checking on their friends. The music video and song couldn’t be more timely.  It shows how hegemony triggers depression. That often happens to young adults these days.

The music video tells the story of a girl who was jilted by her lover. She later discovered that a video of her having sex circulated on the internet. As such, she became the talk of the town. The situation caused her to have a falling-out with her mother, which in turn led to her getting depressed.

Shanti Dope and Flow G on the hip-hop scene

During the red carpet premiere, FreebieMNL got some face time with Shanti Dope. We asked about bridging the gap between the mainstream and underground hip-hop scenes. He said, “Sa tingin ko po wala nang mainstream at underground ngayon.”

For him, both the hip-hop scenes are equal since they only have one arena. This is, of course, the internet. Flow G only nodded in assent.

Shanti Dope’s collab with Flow G, “Kamusta,” is under Universal Music Group. The music video is up on YouTube, and the track is available on digital music platforms.
