Elon Musk Introduces the Tesla Bot

Last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the Tesla Bot concept, an artificially intelligent humanoid robot.

At Tesla’s AI Day presentation, a man dressed in a Tesla Bot suit danced on stage while Musk showed slides that went over key details on the new robot.

According to Musk, “Optimus” the Tesla Bot will run on the same chips and sensors that Tesla cars use for its self-driving features.

Optimus will stand at 5 foot 8 inches tall and weigh about 125 pounds, like a normal human. It will have a screen display in the head area and will soon have autopilot cameras installed. The bot will also be able to carry 45 pounds, lift 150 pounds, and run 5 miles an hour.

“It’s intended to be friendly, of course, and navigate through the world of humans,” Musk said. He went on to say that the robot’s purpose is to eliminate “dangerous, repetitive, and boring tasks.”

Musk assured audiences that the robot wasn’t meant to be an all-powerful, intelligent being. He made a point to emphasize that a human could outrun and overpower Optimus, while also reiterating that the robot was made with earnest intentions in mind.

“We should be worried about AI,” the 50-year-old said during the Q&A session. “What we’re trying to do here at Tesla is make useful AI that people love and is…unequivocally good.”

As for the “repetitive” and “boring” tasks, Musk referenced grocery runs.

“It should be able to, you know, please go to the store and get me the following groceries, that kind of thing,” he explained.

While there isn’t a specific timeline for Tesla’s newest invention (Musk has said that the prototype might be ready by next year), the public should know better than to expect it soon.

Musk has previously announced inventions that never saw the light of day, like the “robotaxis” he pitched in 2019 and the “solar roof” showcased in 2016. The Tesla Bot may fall into this trap, but with Tesla’s cutting-edge technology and Musk’s business prowess, we honestly never really know.
