The 33-year old Canadian, famously coupled with billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk, put it out there that her partner doesn’t necessarily bring out cash to keep her career going.
On Tiktok, Grimes posted a video of herself dancing to a snippet of her new song, “100% Tragedy.” The caption said: “My label thinks this isn’t a single what do y’all think?”
One Tiktok user responded by asking why Grimes is even signed to a label, implying that Musk must provide some sort of financial support for her. The singer replied: “Need to get out of the gate-keeping of indie music and I need $ for music videos etc haha contrary to popular belief my bf doesn’t fund my career.”
The comment is a pleasant surprise, considering who Musk actually is.
To get it straight, Elon Musk is currently (as in, as of this moment) the 3rd richest person in the world, with a net worth of $163 billion. He heads Tesla Inc., an electric vehicle company, and SpaceX, an aerospace company. Annnd, he also co-founded PayPal.
But according to Grimes, she doesn’t funnel Musk’s wealth into her own ventures.
“Grimes is funded by Grimes,” she previously told Rolling Stone. “I don’t want to divert funds from, like, Tesla to my stupid art project. I can’t say the things I say and believe what I believe and then take money from my boyfriend.”
While we love the “Miss Independent” vibes Grimes is giving out, many online users used her standpoint to crack some jokes.
Grimes and Musk have been dating since 2018 and have a one-year-old son together, X Æ A-XII. Her next album will be her first under Columbia Records. She left her previous label, 4AD, earlier this year.
