H.E.R. Will Make Her Feature Film Acting Debut In ‘The Color Purple’ Musical

Oscar-winning singer-songwriter H.E.R. will be taking on her first major acting role!

The Hollywood Reporter announced that the 24-year-old R&B artist has joined the cast of “The Color Purple,” a film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical of the same name. The film will be directed by Ghanaian artist and filmmaker Blitz Bazawule and will premiere on December 20, 2023.

The upcoming movie will be the second screen adaptation of “The Color Purple,” following the 1985 Steven Spielberg film starring Whoopi Goldberg. Both the Broadway musical and film versions were based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker published in 1982.

H.E.R. will make her feature film acting debut as “Squeak,” who “goes from a juke joint waitress to an aspiring singer.” The same character was portrayed by Rae Dawn Chong in the 1985 film version.

“I’ve been so focused on making music but I think it’s time now for me to go full throttle with acting,” H.E.R. told Entertainment Weekly in March 2021. “I’m working on that right now, following my passion for acting.”

Oprah Winfrey, who starred as Sofia in the 1985 version, will serve as a producer for the new film, alongside Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones. Meanwhile, Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini, Adam Fell, and Mara Jacobs will serve as executive producers.
