‘Harry Potter’ TV Series Is In The Works At Max

Max is a newly rebranded streaming platform, formerly known as HBO Max

Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced that they will be producing the first “Harry Potter” TV series. JK Rowling will be acting as the show’s executive producer.

The “Harry Potter” TV series will be a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s bestselling books about the boy wizard and will air on the entertainment company’s rebranded streaming service, Max. The announcement confirms recent speculation about an episode-based show set in the magical world of Hogwarts.

Warner Bros. Discovery has stated that the series will preserve the integrity of Rowling’s books. The series will feature a new cast spanning a decade, with each book’s story becoming a season. No timeline for filming has been given yet.

In a statement, Rowling has expressed her excitement about being part of the new adaptation.

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me. And I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” Rowling says in a statement.

Prior to the announcement, Rowling has recently faced accusations of transphobia for emphasizing biological sex over gender identity in her comments about trans women.

During a press conference, Max content head Casey Bloys declines to comment on Rowling’s issue.

“The ‘Harry Potter’ story is incredibly affirmative and positive and about love and self-acceptance. That’s our priority—what’s on screen,” Variety quotes him. “She’s an executive producer on the show. Her insights are going to be helpful on that.”

He emphasizes that the show’s priority is to stay true to the affirmative and positive themes of the “Harry Potter” story, which promotes love and self-acceptance. Bloys also mentions that Rowling’s insights as an executive producer on the show would be helpful.

The Max streaming service combines HBO Max and Discovery Plus. It will officially launch in the United States on May 23.

“Harry Potter” had a successful film adaptation that catapulted Daniel Radcliffe into stardom after playing the title role in the eight films.
